In fact, the <\/span>New York Times<\/span><\/i> once\u00a0<\/span>called a Webby <\/span>\u201c<\/span>the Internet<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s highest honor.” So,<\/span>\u00a0if you want to battle with the heavyweights, this is the contest for you.<\/span><\/p>\n

Categories<\/h3>\n

Within the Webby<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s <\/span>\u201c<\/span>Mobile Sites and Apps<\/span>\u201d <\/span>category, which “recognizes mobile websites and apps made for all mobile devices,” there are<\/span>\u00a0approximately 40 different awards. <\/span><\/p>\n

These are divided by\u00a0“app type” (fitness and recreation, music, social, and so on) and <\/span>\u201c<\/span>features<\/span>\u201d <\/span>(best streaming audio, best user interface<\/a>, etc.)<\/span><\/p>\n

You can enter as many categories as you wish. However, each entry will cost you $150 to $355 depending on the category and submission date<\/span>. S<\/span>o you may want to limit yourself to those\u00a0you feel most confident about.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mobile apps are judged on six criteria:<\/span><\/p>\n

  2. Structure and navigation<\/strong>: Is the app easy to navigate? Is the structure consistent, intuitive, and transparent?<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Visual design<\/strong>: Is the design appropriate for the audience and content?<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Functionality<\/strong>: This criterion is really important. Does the app load quickly? Does it have few or zero bugs? Does the experience feel frictionless?<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Interactivity<\/strong>: Does the app insist that users\u00a0participate, not spectate?<\/span><\/li>\n
  6. Overall experience<\/strong>: Do users come back again and again? This measure examines <\/span>\u201c<\/span>the intangibles that make one stay or leave.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Early and late entries are typically due in late October and mid-December, respectively.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Crunchies Awards<\/h2>\n

      U<\/span>nlike the other top app awards on this list, <\/span>\u201c<\/span>best app<\/span>\u201d <\/span>is only one trophy\u00a0up for grabs at\u00a0the\u00a0Crunchies<\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>rather than the primary\u00a0focus.<\/span><\/p>\n

      While that means you<\/span>\u2019<\/span>ll likely face steeper competition in the app category, the fact that this event is hosted by TechCrunch<\/a> means the winners are<\/span>\u00a0all but guaranteed media coverage<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

      How to Win<\/h3>\n

      The Crunchies have a somewhat complex system for choosing winners. Nominations are tabulated daily and are open to everyone, meaning that in theory you could vote for your company once a day in all 20 categories. <\/span><\/p>\n

      After the nomination period closes, the Crunchies Committee chooses the top five entries in each category based on <\/span>\u201c<\/span>the quantity, quality, and breadth of submissions received.<\/span>\u201d\u00a0<\/span>This means it<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s pretty important to rally your supporters to vote for you. <\/span><\/p>\n

And with choices like <\/span>\u201c<\/span>Best Social\/Lifestyle App<\/span>\u201d <\/span>and <\/span>\u201c<\/span>Best Business App,<\/span>\u201d <\/span>you<\/span>\u2019<\/span>ve got a good chance of finding your niche.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Next, the app must be <\/span>\u201c<\/span>elegant<\/strong>,<\/span>\u201d <\/span>meaning it reduces the user<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s workload as much as possible, and <\/span>\u201c<\/span>engaging<\/strong>,<\/span>\u201d <\/span>meaning it holds the user<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s attention.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Apple also searches for apps that are <\/span>\u201c<\/span>exciting<\/strong>\u201d <\/span>and <\/span>\u201c<\/span>compelling<\/strong>\u201d\u00a0\u2014\u00a0<\/span>in other words, apps that expand the capabilities of your smartphone.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Finally, the app must be <\/span>\u201c<\/span>reliable<\/strong>.<\/span>\u201d <\/span>It doesn<\/span>\u2019<\/span>t crash, it doesn<\/span>\u2019<\/span>t lose user information, and it doesn<\/span>\u2019<\/span>t act in ways you don<\/span>\u2019<\/span>t expect.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Fantastical 2<\/a> was among the winners of Apple’s 2015 Design Awards<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

    MailChimp Snap allows users\u00a0to send simple, photo-based email campaigns from their smart phones.\u00a0<\/span>That means a relatively complex task\u00a0<\/span>\u2014\u00a0<\/span>designing an email campaign on a small screen\u00a0<\/span>\u2014\u00a0<\/span>becomes nearly effortless. <\/span><\/p>\n

    The app got bonus points for its clean, streamlined UI and how similar it looks and feels to the MailChimp website.<\/span><\/p>\n
